Veteran British musical theatre performer and broadcaster Dame Elaine Paige will receive a special award at the 2026 Olivier Awards, recognizing her decades-long contribution to stage and musical theatre, according to organizers of the London ceremony. The honor comes as the Olivier Awards mark their 50th anniversary, with the event scheduled for April 12 at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Paige, widely known for landmark roles in West End productions including Evita and Cats, has been a central figure in British musical theatre since the 1970s. The Society of London Theatre said the special recognition acknowledges her influence on the development and popularity of modern musical theatre in the United Kingdom.

The performer built her reputation after originating the role of Eva Perón in the first London production of Evita, where she performed the song “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.” She later created the role of Grizabella in Cats, introducing the signature song “Memory,” which became one of the most recognizable numbers in musical theatre.

In addition to her stage career, Paige has remained active as a broadcaster. Since 2004 she has hosted the weekly programme Elaine Paige on Sunday on BBC Radio 2, a show dedicated to musical theatre and stage music that attracts around two million listeners each week.

Recent episodes of the programme have continued to highlight musical theatre productions and industry news. A March broadcast marked International Women’s Day with a playlist featuring female-led songs from stage productions such as Waitress, Made in Dagenham, and Come From Away, according to show details released by Broadway.com.

The 2026 Olivier Awards ceremony, celebrating half a century of the honours, will recognize achievements in theatre, dance and opera across the British stage industry. Organizers said Paige’s special award reflects her enduring impact on performers, audiences and the wider theatre sector.
